6. Where to get more information about manic depression

We have found that most people in our group who have experienced manic depression and their carers are very keen to obtain more information about their illness and treatment. People have found the following sources of information of particular help;

6.1. The Manic Depression Fellowship
The national user-led charity for manic depression provides information and advice.
The MDF
Castle Works
21 St George's Road
London SE1 6ES
(0207 793 2600
e-mail: mdf@mdf.org.uk

6.2. MDF information leaflets
The following are leaflets or booklets produced by the Manic Depression Fellowship;

  • Manic Depression. Bipolar Affective Disorder
  • Lithium Therapy; Questions of Balance
  • Drug Treatment of Manic Depression
  • Parenthood and Manic Depressive Illness
  • ECT; Pros, Cons and Consequences
  • The Enduring Power of Attorney
  • Comfort for Carers
  • Inside Out; A Guide to Self Management of MD
  • A Balancing Act; Help and coping strategies for those who care for people with manic depression
  • Planning Ahead; Advance directives and coping strategies for when you are ill

We think these are all easy to read and concise. The information is of a very high quality and would be our first choice recommended reading for people who have experienced manic depression and those who care about them and others who wish to help.

6.3. Video "Try self help"
Produced in association with the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1996 as part of the Defeat Depression Campaign. (0207 245 1231)

6.4. Video "With a little help from my friends"
Produced in 1998 by Cambridge Television and Film Productions for the Bishop of Ely. This is an excellent, sensible, gentle, but accurate and 'stigma reducing' video. (01353 662749 or (01223 236007. "An important challenge to myths and stigma." Dr. Lynne Friedli, Health Education Council.

6.5. Advance directives (also known as advance agreements)
We feel that having a personal advance directive can be very beneficial. In partnership with the Cambridge MDF self-help group, we have developed notes on advance directives, examples and a suggested pro-forma. Please e-mail us at mdf.southend@btinternet.com or visit our web site at www.mdf.southend.
btinternet.co.uk for more details. It is understood that the new Code of Practice for the Mental Health Act will also include guidance on advance directives.

"[Observations on Manic Depression by Tina and David]...should be compulsory reading for everyone with any contact with people with manic depression."

Dr Liz Armstrong, writing in Pendulum, the MDF Journal.
